Here's this week's question:

 Book Appeal:
When you're browsing Goodreads,
the library, or another blogger's reviews,
what grabs your attention
to make you want to read it?

The cover is always the first thing I notice, whether I find the book on Goodreads or elsewhere.  After that, it's the plot synopsis, if the book in question is fiction, or the subject matter, in the case of a non-fiction book.

On the other hand, if a book looks interesting enough, I will consider reading it.  Then, if I don't like the cover, I do some Googling to see if I can find an edition with a cover I can love.  If at all possible, I try to get the best price for a great-looking cover!

The third factor I consider is the reviews.  I can't always trust them, though.  You never know...sometimes I've bought a book, based on great reviews, only to end up hating it once I've started reading it.  The reverse has also been true.

I guess the best thing to do is to borrow the book from a library first, then, if one really likes it, go ahead and buy it.  This is not an option for me, because I've sworn off libraries!

I really think, when all is said and done, that I rely on instinct at times, after considering all three of the above factors!

Here are some books I've
read recently.
 They all have great covers,
fantastic plots,
and a lot of rave reviews!

  1. I never even thought of looking for the book with a different cover - actually it wasn't until recently that I realized that 1 book can have a LOT of different covers.

  2. Hi, Tanya!

Yeah, a lot of books have different covers, if they have been published in different editions. This is more common with older books like classics, though. In the case of more recently published books, there's frequently a different cover for the US and UK editions. Sometimes I do prefer the UK cover, and will try to buy that edition, if I really like the book.

Thanks for the comment! Happy Friday!! : )

  3. I think so too - though we all try to identify what makes us choose a book, it's more often than not the book that captures our interest that we'll end up reading :)

  4. You've sworn off libraries? 0_o ...Why? Libraries are my best friend, LOL. They help me feel frugal. :D BTW, have you ever found that a ton of UK covers are way better than the US ones? They make me all want to buy from Amazon.co.uk!

I hope you'll drop by and enter my giveaway to win one of three ARCs! :)

  5. Hi, Alexa!

You know, it turns out to be very true. I've been disappointed in the past by books with beautiful covers, but plots that really fell flat for me...

Thanks for commenting!! Happy Friday!! : )

  6. Hi, Yahong!

Yes, I've been avoiding libraries for years now. That's because it was SO frustrating for me to borrow a book, take it home, read it, fall in love with it, and then have to return it!! I HAVE to own my own books, you see. So I stopped going to libraries. Now, my apartment itself IS a library! Lol. I have so many books...

I have indeed seen that some UK covers are better than the US ones. However, in the case of "Daughter of Smoke and Bone", it's a different story. I don't like the UK cover AT ALL. I much prefer the US one! In the case of other books, I sometimes prefer the UK covers. Not always, though.

When I do prefer a book's UK cover, I go ahead and order from The Book Depository. They have FREE shipping, worldwide!

I'm going over to your blog to check out the giveaway!

Thanks for commenting, and happy Friday!! : )
